March 23rd 2025 1Timothy ch 4 v 8 - 16
V 8. Bodily exercise profiteth little. the reference to the present life and to the life to come suggests that it means we need to concentrate on the things to come and exercise ourselves in reading and learning the scriptures. Godliness. This word is used only by Paul and Peter in the NT, and is the word for obedience to the Gospel in all areas of life.
It implies a basis of sound doctrine (Tit 1 v 1). See I Tim 3 v 16.
The life . . . to come. This and similar expressions are basic in Paul's theology and eschatology.
The most important thing, is the life to come. We need to have salvation from Jesus
Things of this world pass away, eternity is forever
V 9. This is a faithful Saying. Gospel message, word. As in 3 v 1, here the expression sums up what has been discussed.
"Word" in one accepted English sense is "an utterance as implying the faith or authority of the person who utters it"
V 10. We Trust. Have set our hope on.
Setting one's hope on the living God, who is able to make good his promises in this life and the next, is a great motive for a life of toil and conflict in the advancement of the Gospel.
Suffer reproach. Gods servant is forbidden to "strive" in the sense of II Tim 2 v 24, where a different word is used, meaning to quarrel."
Here, as in Jude 3, it means to contend earnestly."
Saviour Used in the sense of "deliverer"; the word can have a wider and a narrower meaning.
Paul's conception of God is such that all the blessings, deliverances, and kindly providences which men experience are to be attributed only to him (Mt 5 v 45).
In a special and higher sense, he is the deliverer of those who believe unto eternal salvation.
V 11. Command and teach. Here Paul takes up and emphasizes his “put the brethren in remembrance of “ verse 6 and points forward to the forceful conclusion of the whole paragraph in verse 16.
The form of the verbs emphasizes the progressive and continuous nature of the work.
V 12. Let no man despise thy youth. So far from his youth's being a hindrance, Timothy might be an example to believers in word (speech)
Conversation (manner of life)
Charity (love)
Faith (faithfulness)
Purity (strictly chastity but here in the sense of careful observance of religious duties)
In spirit is not in the some of the texts
V 13. Here are emphasized things which demand special attention among the people
reading (public reading of scripture ,
exhortation (comfort, encouragement, admonition. exhortation, the whole area of ministry which would today be described as counselling but here the context favours the ministry of preaching.
expounding the Scriptures,,
doctrine teaching).
V 14. The Gift. Teaching and counselling are mentioned together (Rom 12 v 7,8 teachers are among the gifts of the Spirit to the Church I Cor 12 v 28);
pastors and teachers are mentioned as a unit .Eph 4 v 11). this word "meaning "gift of grace" can be applied to any gift of God through the Spirit.
Here it seems to imply a charge given at ordination.
Paul reiterates it and reminds Timothy, here and at 1 v 18.
Presbytery (used only in Lk 22 v 66, Acts 22 v 5, and here) refers to a group of representative spiritual leaders, chosen and proved.
V 15. Meditate on these things, Practice, cultivate, or take pains with; used only here and in Acts 4 v 25.
Profiting. Advancement.
V 16. Thyself. The minister needs to be reminded of his own needs in connection with doctrine; in feeding others he too must seek a blessing.
Continue in them. This is one of the basic words used to describe the steadfast walk of a Christian ( Gal 3 V 10; Heb 8 V 9; Jas 1 V 25; Acts 14 v 22; Col 1 v 23).
Basically it is the same as "abide" in John 15 and I John.
Save is used in the sense of the "work out your own salvation" of Phil 2 v 12
